I just! He was so alone! He doesn’t deny that he was lonely, he tells her he’s not lonely now. He’s just so completely honest with her about his feelings and exactly what she means to him. She is his entire family, and even though he doesn’t have anyone else, she’s enough for him, because she is just that special to him. It was like he was waiting his entire life for her to come along and give him that love he was without. 

And she just completely gets it. She understands that this is someone who had to depend on himself and probably felt no one would ever look out for him and protect you. And she’s like, “yeah, that’s over now. Because I am your family, I am going to protect you no matter what. You can be taken over by monsters, you can be kidnapped, you can be even killed and you know what? You’ll be all right, because I will go through hell and fight any evil to bring you back safe and whole. That’s what me being your family means, someone you can always count on. And that’s forever. I will protect you because I love you and that’s what I do and who I am.”

It’s even greater because in anime/Japanese culture “I will protect you” is generally something a dude is supposed to say to prove his love for his girlfriend, regardless of how capable she is of protecting herself. Because men are supposed to protect women to prove their love no matter what, I guess. But Sailor Moon says “fuck you gender roles, we know the lady in this relationship is the most powerful one most capable of protecting, and sure he wants to protect her too, but guess what, she loves her boyfriend and will always protect HIM just as well.”
